Equip the carving knife.
Rightclick on a log in your inventory and select Create > Weapons > Shaft.
Each shaft require 2 weight-units of a log.

Equip the iron saw.
Rightclick a log in your inventory and select Create > Weapons > Plank.
Each plank requires 4 weight-units of a log.

Get a log by picking one up.
Make shafts.
Equip the carving knife, rightclick a shaft in your inventory and select Create > Misc > Mallet Head.
Equip the mallet head and rightclick a shaft, and select Create > Tools > Mallet.
Keep trying until you construct a finished mallet!
