Tich's Art of FlatRaising
Definition
Flatraising is a term used to describe the process of making slopes greater than 40 dirts (4 meters).

Purpose
Dirt "flows" when a slope gets to 40 dirts (4 meters). "Flowing" means that the dirt will slide down the slope until it gets to a lesser slope (less than 40). Dirt will also flow if the diagonal slope of the tile is over 40 dirts (4 meters).

Measurement
To find out how many dirts (how steep) a slope is, examine the tile border. A digging skill of 15 or better will allow a "mouseover" examination of the border when a shovel is activated.

Restrictions
The largest slope you can make is 3x your skill.

Method
For this example I will assume that you're starting with a 4x4 (completely flat) area and want to flatraise the middle 2x2 area.
# Drop 40 dirts on each exterior corner of the 2x2 area.
# Once the exterior corners are raised 40 dirts, start dropping dirt (batches of 10-20 dirt is typical) in the center of the 2x2 area.
# Flatten one of the tiles (rotating the tile to flatten is a good idea; if not you had better flatten all the 4 tiles). Remember not to stand on the high point when flattening as you will get "ouchies".
# Repeat until you get the "spire" to your desired height or to the maximum height for your skill level.

Variation
Another option is to dig at the base of a slope to increase it, but this is not always possible (e.g. on landbridges or when building a road along rock).

Tip
* Once the slope gets over 29 dirts, you will have climb to get up and down from the 2x2 area. To save time, use this method to prevent you from having to climb up and down the slope as you work: drop items you have in your inventory (easier with four different items) until you form a "pile of items" which is easy to target. Then add at least 2 dirts to the pile and remove your items. You may add up to 100 dirts to each pile (one pile per tile).

Our policies are essentially unchanged from what they were back on freedom, but with some added degree of care being taken due to the slightly volitile nature of the wild server.
As before we are not ruled by a single individual, but instead take into account the opinions and desires of all our members whenever possible. It is our philosophy that everyone should be allowed to do whatever they want to have fun in wurm, and as such we have no defined or enforced roles like many other settlements, instead opting for practicality and a common desire to help eachother out with whatever skills are needed.

As before, the primary language spoken in local is swedish and we apologize in advance to anyone passing by.
*A fully functional wishing well, both water and enchanted.
*Two merchant houses with high ql merchandise
*A Harbour with piers for bigger ships and a marina for smaller crafts

Politics
Government

The combined group effort that today is known as BoS Island is not ruled by a single individual, such as a mayor, but instead is held together by a sense of friendship and comraderie. The inhabitants regulary comes together to work on larger projects.
From time to time the group has been known to temporarly invite friends and travelers to live as citizens in the village, or to invite honorary citizens. People invited in this way do not have a vote when deciding issues that concern the citizenry, but they will of course listen to their input.

Language use

People of many ages inhabit the island, and the languages spoken most frequently are swedish and english. Regular chat regulations are naturally being followed, however the inhabitants wish to apologize beforehand to the non-swedish speakers that happen to pass by if they feel left out of the loop when swedish is being spoken.

History
As remembered by the inhabitants.

The story of BoS actually starts without any of its current members, with a fellow by the name Amader who had been playing on and off for a long time on the Jenn-kellon Home server. He, in turn, attracted Solver to the game and Einnel, Daash, Theacke, Madboy, Rmt and Tottman were soon to follow. The site where we all settled down was dubbed Wolf Hill, due to the frequence of said lupine at the site, even though it was too close to Serenity Port for an actual deed to be planted without permission. We asked for that from the Serenity Port mayor, but were rudely denied and so eventually we packed up and left for other lands.

Amader, together with his RL friend Madonna, went seperate ways from the rest of us and settled in the far north while the rest of us finally found ourselves at a tranquil bay in the south, approximately SSW of Mesa Verde, where we settled down and founded the Bay of Swedes.

Bay of Swedes was the name of our community, as most of us wanted their own homestead deed and founded them seperately. With time, our reputation on the Home server grew and our gathering became widely known. During this time some of our members stopped playing, but most remained. Several ambitious projects were attempted, and some even completed ;), and by the end of its time the bay had been transformed into a lush park of walkways, flower fields and oak tree groves.

With the advent of the Freedom server, and imminent closure of Home, the people of BoS packed up their bags and moved once more. Since we now had ships, the process was a bit easier this time. Arriving in freedom (09-06-17), we came upon a suitable island to the northeast of the main continent and swiftly claimed it as our own. This time we established a deed right away to cement our hold over the island. Since it wasn't an actual bay, we named it "BoS island" in honor of our past and the reputation it held.

Time went by and we started to settle in, taming the area and mining caves in search of the treasured ores. This arrangement worked for a couple of weeks until opinions clashed and some of us decided to move and settle down near our old friend Riverboy(alt Lilbear). We started to make room for us and putting down our own deeds. Right about this time the concept of breeding was introduced in the game. As a result the numbers of wild animals decreased rapidly, and as such hunting became a dreary prospect indeed.

So when the portals between freedom and wild opened up 09-10-22, some of us took the chance and used it. Almost completely empty of all gear when we arrived on the other side, we were met up by a couple of players that took us in. See as HOTS.

Nearly all of our members left for wild that day, leaving only Aske and Daash left on Freedom. Even though we've branched on different servers, we are still one community and linked together.

Main / Skills / War machines / PAGENAME

Description
Catapults is the skill to use a catapult.

Usage
A catapults primary use is the destruction of walls and gates. You can hit another person with it, but it's very difficult.

To use a catapult, you must first load it with ammunition. Almost everything can be catapulted, but rock shards and stone bricks do the most damage. Quality and damage of the ammunition will affect the amount of damage done to your target. To load a catapult, double-click an item in your inventory, right-click the catapult, and select Machine -> Load.

After you load the catapult, it must be winched. With every winch the catapult shoots 1 tile further. The minimum distance a catapult can shoot is 10 tiles, the maximum distance is 100 tiles. To winch a catapult, right-click the catapult after it has been loaded, and select winch.
This distance is calculated including both the tiles that the catapult and the target are standing on.

To aim the catapult, simply drag it so that it points to the target.

After it has been winched at least 10 laps, you can fire the catapult. Right-click the catapult, select Machine and then select 'Fire'. If it was properly aimed and winched, you will either get a message in event window that you just missed the target, or that you've hit it. If it only says that you've hit nothing, your aim is off.

Additional notes
* A catapult will hit every wall of a tile with a house on it, but will only hit the west and north walls of a tile with fences on it. Because of this it may be a better idea to use dual layers of fences, rather than a one tile wide house, to defend against them.
* Any item launched with the catapult will be either heavily damaged or destroyed. Any item that's not destroyed will be at the tile you've launched it at.
* Catapults can fire over buildings and walls
* You'll need 21 body strength to operate a catapult
* Catapults cannot hit guard towers.
* You can do a maximum of 20 damage to your target in one successful hit.
* A brass spyglass is an excellent tool for measuring distance when winching

Tips
* When attacking with a catapult during a raid, a good strategy is to use ore as ammunition. Ore does the same damage as equivalent quality rock, but unlike rock cannot be used by the defenders to repair or rebuild their walls.
* Weight of the ammunition is an important factor, so combine your ammunition into large chunks for maximum damage. (maximum 80 kilo or it will not fit into the catapult.)
History
As remembered by the inhabitants.

The story of BoS actually starts without any of its current members, with a fellow by the name Amader.

Arriving in freedom, we came upon a suitable island to the northeast of the main continent and swiftly claimed it as our own. This time we established a deed right away to cement our hold over the island. Since it wasn't an actual bay, we named it "BoS island" in honor of our past and the reputation it held.

Time will tell where we will go from here.
Description
BoS, short for Bay of Swedes, is a community started by a group of swedish people that thought the area looked like a good place to settle on. To this date it has expanded from a single safehouse into several homesteads and villages. They have have a good communication with their closest allies Mesa Verde and Tenakill. It is not ruled by a single individual, such as a mayor, but instead is held together by a sense of friendship and comraderie. The inhabitants regulary comes together to work on larger projects.

Features
* A Collossus looking down on the bay.
* Highway leading directly to NT. It is considered public, but the creators reserve the right to change it at any time. Its current look is a 2-tile cobblestone road with gravel on the sides. [Some parts still unfinished]
* A nice looking harbour with docks for both large and small ships/boats. It is meant to be used by BoS members only. If you want to station/dock a boat there you are recommended to ASK first.
* All roads in BoS are 2 or 3-tile wide, but these, unlike the NT road, are NOT public roads. These roads are constantly undergoing changes.
* Most of the settlements are close to water and encompass the complete coastline of the bay.
* All the regular convenient resources are available, such as clay, tar and peat.

Founders of BoS
*Daash, Einnel, Gustavl, Lillmad, Madboy, Rmt, Solver, Theacke and Tottman.

Local chat guidelines
People of many ages inhabit the bay, and the languages spoken most frequently are swedish and english. Regular chat regulations are naturally being followed, however the inhabitants wish to apologize beforehand to the non-swedish speakers that happen to pass by if they feel left out of the loop when swedish is being spoken.

Settling down in BoS
If you would like to settle down in, or around, the bay, the inhabitants ask that any newcomers follow a few rules.

*Before building, ask your neighbours so you don't spoil existing projects. For example:
**Chopping down wooded areas where specific trees have been planted.
**Building your house on an area designated for future expansion by someone else.
**Open up mines that crosses already existing ones. Dropshafts are a benefit to noone.
*Remember that all players in BoS will need to be independent when living there. Therefore:
**Do not make demands of your neighbors, or consistently ask for things. The inhabitants are happy to help, but not on your terms.

Einnel: completely rewritten to make it much easier to understand.

Main / Guides / PAGENAME

Flattening is the digging process of making a tile flat. A tile is considered flat when all four corners of the tile are of the same height, which can be seen by examining tile borders. If all 4 borders around a tile are reported as "level", the tile is flat.

How to flatten a tile
You can go about flattening a tile using 2 methods: manual and automatic. While "automatic" sounds nice, it's actually quite a bit more complicated to get right than doing it manually until you get the hang of it.

The automatic way
The automatic way is to use the Flatten command by right-clicking on a tile with your shovel activated. Additionally, you must also be physically standing on that tile for it to work right.

In a nutshell, the flatten command takes dirt from high corners and and puts them on lower ones than the calculated average from the server zero-plane. The zero-plane is the lowest point possible in wurm, where digging further would result in you falling through the world. This plane is absolutely flat, and all dirt and rock heights are calculated from this plane by means of simple addition. This sounds a bit abstract, i know, but read on and all will be explained.

An example
Imagine that you are on the continent of flatland on flatten flats. This imaginary land has no slopes whatsoever, anywhere, and no water. You are standing in the middle of one tile in this land with a cart containing 40 dirts.You walk over to one of the 4 corners on that tile and drops 10 dirt on it from the cart. It now has a height of 10 dirt. Next, you repeat the procedure on the other 3 corners and suddenly you have a tile that is elevated 10 dirts above the rest of flatland. The height of each corner is 10.

*Corner 1: 10
*Corner 2: 10
*Corner 3: 10
*Corner 4: 10

Ok, now imagine that you decide to mess things up by digging up 5 dirt from one of the corners and put them on one of the 3 others. This could result in...

*Corner 1: 5
*Corner 2: 10
*Corner 3: 15
*Corner 4: 10

But you realize that doing this was retarded, and want the tile flat again. You could just dig up the extra 5 dirt from corner 3 again and drop them on corner 1 and it would be taken care of, but instead of that you position yourself on the tile and select "flatten".

How it works
What the game now does is calculate the height of your tile's corners based off the absolute zero plane of the game, in the example above the zero plane is the continent of flatland, so... 5+10+15+10=40. Divide that by 4 corners and you get, surprise, 10! So, the game now knows that the target height for the 4 corners is 10 dirts each, and begins to gradually take dirt from those corners above the target height and put it on the corners below it. It will continue to do this until one of the following conditions are met upon which it will stop:

* The tile is flat
* The tile corners have run out of dirt to make it completely flat (this will happen if the calculated average corner height isn't divisable by 4). Add extra dirt or dig away the surplus, then try again.
* It tries to alter a corner which is connected to a tile with an obstruction on it. The most common are tree, clay, marsh and moss.
* It tries to alter a corner which is obstructed by a wall of any type.
* It tries to alter a corner which would create a slope that is steeper than your digging skill * 3.
* It hits rock in a corner

In the instance of case 2 above, there is dirt either missing or too much of it to make the tile completely flat. As stated, if the sum of the heights of the corners is a multiple of four, then the tile can be flattened. Otherwise, there are 1-3 dirt extra that prevent it from being completely even. The different results are listed below:

* If there is 1 extra dirt, you attempt to assemble.
* If there are 2 extra dirt:
** If the dirts are on the same corner (0-0-0-2), you attempt to assemble once.
*** In this case, the tile is not flattened completely. You must flatten again to finish.
** Otherwise, if you have at least one dirt in your inventory, you attempt to fill twice.
** Otherwise, you attempt to assemble twice.
* If there are 3 extra dirts, you attempt to fill.

Assemble means you attempt to dig one dirt on a high corner. If you can carry an additional dirt, the message "You assemble some dirt from a corner." is displayed and you gain one dirt. Otherwise, the message "If you could carry one more dirt pile, one more corner could be levelled" is displayed.

Fill means you attempt drop one dirt on a low corner. If you have a dirt to drop, the message "You use some of the dirt in one corner." is displayed and you lose one dirt. Otherwise, the message "If you carried some dirt, it would be used to fill the 1 corners that need it" is displayed.

If the flattening action successfully flattened the tile completely, the message "The ground is flat here." will be displayed. If this message is not displayed, you either failed to perform an assemble or fill, or it was a 0-0-0-2 spread.

Flattening time
The action time is based on the height difference in "dirts" between the highest and lowest corners of the tile. The time is 9 seconds plus an additional 10 seconds for every 4 dirts difference. Examples:

* 0 = "The ground is flat now."
* 1..3 = 9 secs
* 4..7 = 19 secs
* 8..11 = 29 secs
* 12..15 = 39 secs
* 16..19 = 49 secs
* etc

Examples of tiles that would give 9 seconds flattening time (the number below is the height difference):

<pre>
0---1 or 0---3 or 0---0
|   |    |   |    |   |
1---2    3---3    0---3
(2)      (3)      (3)
</pre>

Manual flattening
Manual flattening is the act of making an area flat through manually digging and dropping dirt. While the process requires more interaction by the digger, it is vastly superior when flattening large areas of land.

How to do it
# Pick a single corner as your reference (you could place a small barrel or another container on it so you know the reference corner if you wish).
# Stand on this corner and right-click on a tile border linking to another corner you wish to adjust.
# If the message reads "the slope is <number of dirts> steep towards you, the other corner is higher than your reference corner, and you'll need to walk over to it and dig it down by the specified amount.
# If the message reads "the slope is <number of dirts> steep away from you, the other corner is lower than your reference corner and needs to be filled up.
# Once the tile border reports "level", walk over to the corner you've adjusted and use it as your new reference corner. Since the level between it and your old reference corner is level, they're at the same height. Now look for a new slope to adjust and repeat the procedure as before.

Summary
Understand that the world is made up of pillars, and that the tiles are merely thin textures stretched out from the pillar's highest points. When you dig or drop dirt, all you do is adjust the height of the pillar (ie, a corner) you are standing nearest. When digging, all that matters are the corners. Tiles only matter when you use the "flatten" command, in which case the selected tile only decides which 4 corners (or pillars) should be compared to eachother and adjusted. Otherwise, forget about the tiles, only think about the corners. Also, never forget that when digging and dropping dirt, it doesn't matter where you click, only where your feet are located.

Using a combination of manual and automatic flattening is usually the best idea once you've gotten the hang of how the system works, but until you do you may find it easier to rely on manual flattening.

The limitations of manual flattening is, of course, that it may take more time and interaction to complete, and also is subject to dirt flow. Dirt flow is what happens when you try to drop dirt on a corner with a slope that exceeds 25 in steepness. When using the "flatten" command, dirt flow does not apply and you can use it to create extreme slopes by the use of a technique known as flatraising

Taming is a skill used to make an animal a pet. You can only have one pet at a time, if you have a pet and you tame another, your first pet will become untamed. Pets that become untamed will return to their normal hostile / non-hostile stance; ie if the animal is normally hostile it will begin attacking guards and players.

There is a penalty to taming for Blacklighters; taming is still possible but with a higher level of difficulty.

Only animals can be tamed; for monsters you need to be a Priest/Priestess and a follower of Magranon or Libila.
* A Priest/Priestess of Magranon at 40 faith can cast Dominate to tame monsters.

* A Priest/Priestess of Libila at 40 faith can cast Rebirth to raise the spirit of a slain animal, monster or player as a zombie pet.

50 taming skill gives the title "Animal Trainer".

Method
You can use tame by activating an item the animal will eat. For some animals its seeds, for others its meat/fish.

Taming skill and status of animal

* 0-10 Upset
* 10-20 Nervous
* 20-30 Submissive
* 30-40 Calm
* 40-50 Tame
* 50-60 Loyal
* 60-70 Trusting
* 70-80 Loyal to death
* 80+ still unknown

Note: Status does unknown things to tamed animals, if you have any information, please edit this

Edit: The taming status can be used to know when your animal will go untame. Here is an explanation on how taming seems to work. When you tame an animal numerous times, at a 42 taming skill, for example, your animal will have a max "tamed level" of [42]. Over time, this value will decay, and examining the animal to check its status can tell you on average how high this "level" is, with "upset" being the least reliable status, as your animal could go untame without further warning.

A pet can be ordered to go somewhere or to attack other animals/people. You can also lead a pet with a rope.

A pet can't be tamed by another person while it's your pet. A higher taming skill will probably make the animal stay longer as your pet.

You can decide if your pet should go offline or stay online when you log off. Right-click something and select <tt>Pet > Go (off/on)line.</tt>

You can give your pet to another person (if they do not already have a pet). Right-click on person and select <tt>Pet > Give away pet</tt>.

The QL of the taming item speeds up the taming action. It is about 1 second less per 20 QL.

Important Notice
As of February 2008, when Mol-Rehan was introduced, Taming was made much harder. While past mechanics allowed you to just try and tame again when you failed, the new system will make the animal go aggressive and attack you if you fail by too large a margin. Additionally, it will lose a level of loyalty when this happens. If that wasn't enough, all animals had their taming difficulty severely raised, making it nearly impossible to tame a champion class animal and a gruesome project to tame even an ordinary bear with as high as 50 taming. You are adviced to take extreme caution when attempting to tame something, preferably by fencing the animal in and taking refuge outside the gate if the animal goes berserk on you.

If the animal has at least a single level of loyalty left after going aggressive from a failed taming, it will revert to its tamed status again after a while, provided nobody attacks it. Naturally neutral animals such as pigs, roosters, pheasants and unicorns will also return to their neutral state some time after a fail.
Also, don't forget that deed and tower guards automatically attack hostile animals.

If you are going to invest in taming then be prepared to either wait and hope it will be made easier again, or invest enough time into it to bring it above 50 for it to be of any real use.

A good guide to raising Taming skill
You'll need:<br>
1x cauldron<br>
1x meat<br>
1x pig<br>
1x pottery flask<br> and
water

1. Fill the cauldron with the water and put the meat in and cook it till it makes a soup.<br>
2. Get the pig and if you haven't done so already, walk it off deed.<br>
3. Get the pottery flask and drag the soup from the cauldron to the flask and tame the pig off deed, you'll only take .25 of the soup into the flask from the cauldron.<br> 4. Tame the pig using the soup in the flask and once its tamed, repeat the process over and over till you have no more soup.<br>
never seen it happen, myself. checked on a pile that was off-deed and regulary took dirt from it for my pinewood piles, and i never saw any damage on any of it for at least a whole week. Additionally, several dirt piles containing 100 dirt kept that amount, without damage, throughout at least another week.

Recent Edits
I'm not sure if you realize this, but the item:xxx, skills:xxx, etc. entries exist to service the limited wiki functionality of the Wurm client and should not be redirected to the more complex counterparts. See, for instance, item:foot board. Go into your client, hit F1 then type "wiki foot board" without the quotes. As you can see the ingame wiki client can only really display raw text and ends up showing the user all the formatting commands necessary to make the template. The item:xxx entries are meant to be more sparse just to give players a basic idea of what they're looking at when they use the wiki command in console or when then choose the "What's this?" option from the right click menu.

I would also say that it's generally not a good idea at all to make broad sweeping changes to any wiki without first discussing it with others. Take for example talk:Template Sandbox which I created because I wanted to implement templates but I first wanted to see what people thought and I wanted to give them a chance to add their own ideas on the subject before I went ahead and started changing a bunch of pages.

To be honest I'm not sure what the best course of action is from here and I'd like to see what others think. In the meantime, you may want to consider reverting all those redirects and perhaps talking out whatever idea you may have had. --Hephaestus 09:04, 3 September 2007 (CDT)
Settlement template
It's nice that you're eager to get started, but it would be much appreciated if you tried to cooperate with the rest of us. There's been some planning discussion for the template at WurmPedia_talk:Settlements, and there's always room for discussion on the template pages as well. It is desirable that we agree about the template design before it's deployed all over the wiki. And while I agree with the naming in this case, template names are also something that shouldn't be decided unilaterally. So, will you consider joining us on the talk pages? - Dashiva 14:07, 8 November 2007 (CST)
He then moved to the size 15 village of Rivendell. Once there, he helped dig defensive trenches for several days before being admitted as a citizen.
Some items cannot be improved and will reflect that when the examine command gives no information for improvement. The tools from the newbie starter kit, for example, falls into this category as do most building materials.
Description
An iron ribbon. Primarily used to make fine carpentry items out of, such as large barrels and large chests. Also useful for their part in support beams.

Tips
An iron ribbon is a component, it is never used for improving anything. As such it's a common practice to mostly use the low quality iron resulting from re-smelting scraps or from poor quality iron ore. You can always improve the finished item later on (The same practice is commonly found when making nails).
However, it may be wise to have at least a few of them of higher quality available as some items require them in the first phase of construction, and thus will be lost if you fail at it. A higher quality ribbon will give you better chances of success when creating an item, whereas continuing an unfinished item will only damage the ribbon slightly if you fail.

Water is found at the coasts and lakes of the world. Other than a safe refuge from a variety of non-swimming animals and monsters, it has a number of practical uses and can be collected in containers.

Usage
To collect water, activate a container capable of holding liquid, such as a pottery jar, pottery flask or small barrel and then right-click a submerged tile and select fill. The action is executed on the tile itself, so if it's too deep you will get a message that you are too far away.

Once collected, you can use water for:
*Drinking to regain stamina regeneration (you can also do this directly on the tile)
*Tempering metal items when smithing
*Treating pottery items before hardening in a fire
*Mix with other items using alchemy, for example to make paint
*As an ingredient when cooking gulasch and porridge

Water level
Water at sea level is universally set throughout the whole of WURM, and as such is always the same. This also applies when mining tunnels. If you mine deep enough you will hit sea level and create a submerged cave floor tile. This can be used to collect water from, just like any other submerged tile.

Travelling on the waterways
When traversing water you travel more slowly than on land, but as mentioned before this may be preferable as many animals can't swim and so you are generally safe from them. You cannot drag a cart into water, instead you may use a raft which functions the exact same way but only works on water.

The land of WURM is divided into two large islands, Wild and Home. By swimming off the western coast of Home you can reach Wild, and vice versa on Wild's east coast.

Tips
Max quality of the finished whetstone is determined by the quality of the rock shard used. Try to use as high quality a shard as possible, however it's no big loss to just make a new one later on as they need very little source material.

The max quality of the finished kindling is determined by the quality of the log or wood scrap used. This is important for campfires since the quality will decide heating speed, but not so for ovens and forges since their innate quality decides that instead.

Description
Foraging is the skill used in searching for food and herbs. Eating this food directly from the ground will solve starvation, but
it is more effective when used in cooking. It is believed that a higher Foraging skill increases the likelihood of finding some food or herbs.

Info
* Right-click a grass-tile and select Nature ---> Forage
* You can find a Foraging and Botanizing item every 24 hours ( real time ) per grass-tile.
Items
:*Strawberries
:*Nettles
:*Lingonberry
:*Blueberry
:*Garlic
:*Hazelnuts
:*Onion
:*Parsley

Tips
It is not a verified fact, but it is believed that the 24 hour timer on a tile is triggered upon the attempt, and not when/if you actually obtain an item from it. Therefore if you find nothing, you are better off trying another tile instead of repeatedly trying on the same one.

And don't forget that you can both forage and botanize on the same tile, these actions are on seperate timers.

Description
A campfire used to heat stuff. The higher the quality, the faster it will heat up anything put in it.

Usage
Cooking, Smithing: Metallurgy

To extend the life of a fire you need to add fuel to it. Activate a log or wood scrap, right click the Campfire and select Burn. It caps out at 20kg worth of fuel, so adding any more than that at any one time is a waste. You can examine a campfire to get a message telling how long it will burn. If it says that it "...will burn for a long time", it means that you got more than 10 minutes worth of fuel in it. If it says anything else, its less than that and you'd be wise to add more.

Fires may hold up to 18 ore.

The quality of the kindling decides the quality of the campfire, and the higher the quality of the campfire, the sooner food will cook or smithing items reach their "glowing hot" stage.

An expired campfire will yield 0.10kg of ash when emptied of items.

Tips
Contrary to what was believed, the quality of the material you fuel the fire with using the "burn" command has no impact at all on the heating speed or lifespan of the fire. Weight is the only thing that matters. You can however adjust the properties of a fire by using a different kind of fuel such as Birchwood, Tar or Peat, rather than just plain old pinewood

Additionally, don't forget to keep your fire in a "..will burn for a long time" state because it will lose heating power when fuel begins to run low. At its final stages, it may very well be so weak that items inside will cool faster than they heat.
Description
A small axe specifically made for woodcutting, and is much better at this task than any other type of axe. It is a poor weapon for fighting, however.

As of a patch in late 2007, this tool is now given out as part of the newbie starter kit from an NPC guide in Newtown instead of the small axe that was provided before. It is made from birchwood, is not improvable, and will burn if put in any kind of fire. Take care as to not accidentally lose it in this way.

Hatchets made after the fight fix in late 2007 will weigh 1kg more than those made before the fight fix. This applies to self made and newbie hatchets.

Tips
The Hatchet is the only tool that will continue to give you skill above 20 when cutting down trees with it. Cutting down a tree with anything else than a Hatchet will only increase your skill with that tool/weapon to a maximum of 20, after which you will have resort to other means to raise it further. You will still gain skill in woodcutting however, no matter what tool or weapon you use.
