Description
Black, sooty charcoal.

Creation
Charcoal is created by slowly burning lots of wood in a charcoal pile. Charcoal is also a butchering product of a lava fiend or a lava spider.

Usage
Its main use is to create steel, in combination with iron.

Notes
Charcoal can be combined to larger pieces. Making steel from those larger pieces will only consume the necessary charcoal.

Tip: You can split a 1.5 kg animal charcoal into 0.5 kg pieces by putting it in a bulk storage bin and taking the pieces back out.
Description
This rope is thinner and used for hoisting and lowering sails.

Cordage rope is the most difficult rope to create. It is used in shipbuilding, for some traps, and also for sacrificing.

Creating
Cordage rope requires approximately 20 ropemaking skill. With a high quality rope tool this requirement will diminish. For example with a 65ql rope tool you will need just under 15 ropemaking skill, whereas with a 26ql rope tool you will need nearly 21 skill. Cordage ropes become an option when your chance to make a mooring rope increases to 25%.

* Note: At 13.97 skill with a 68.86 rope tool (Other items % are: Thick rope 50%, Rope 75%, Bow String 64%, Mooring Rope 24%, Cordage Rope 6%)

Failure to create a cordage rope results in the loss of 0.05kg of wemp fibre.

Usage
* Large square rig
* Spinnaker rig
* Square rig
Like many players, the ability to construct and then command ships appeals to me. And like many things in Wurm, it can be a long, and sometimes frustrating, journey towards completing a ship.
Container comparison
Containers have a weight and hold a given volume of items. Some containers will not hold liquids and others only hold liquids. Some are mobile containers, others are stationary, and most can be carried in your inventory. Items are sorted by increasing volume.

Jars used to hold 1.94 kg instead of 2.00, but all such jars were destroyed in the cataclysm before Gold 2.

Volume denotes the number of kilograms (kgs) of a liquid--usually water--a container will hold. The weight attribute is the weight of the container itself, not the amount of weight it will hold. Items list their weight although when it comes to storing them inside containers it's their hidden volume attribute that is used. For example, a cart will only hold 94kg of cotton, but that same cart will hold 1,400kg of bricks because the cotton has significantly greater volume than bricks. Unfortunately the volume of items is not displayed--only their weight.

If a container contains a liquid, it cannot contain other items (solid or liquid). One exception is that water can be mixed with cooking ingredients, e.g. to make soup.

A ship is used to sail the seven seas.

Ships are made using ship building, usually started by combining two keel sections.

Most ships require some Mind logic (see Vessel Details)

Note: The small raft floats, but cannot be boarded, so does not even count as a boat.

Security
Without an attached boat lock anyone can use the ship. If the ship is not moored it can be dragged or pushed away.

The person who finishes the ship becomes the owner. This was changed in Summer 2011. Before that the last person who had the unfinished ship in the inventory became the owner. To prevent someone from stealing or finishing your unfinished boat make sure no one but you can get access by either building it in a locked cart or a small temporary house.

Ownership can be transferred by the owner in the vehicle management window.

The owner and any person with the Manage right can manage the usage permissions through a window available via the Manage vehicle menu option.

The permissions control drive (embarking as commander), mount (embarking as a passenger), accessing the inventory hold of the ship and managing the settings.
Each of these rights can be granted or denied to all friends, all villagers and everyone. The owner always has all permissions. The settings only take affect if the ship is locked however.

The owner of the ship can attach a boat lock to it to enable permissions. The lock can be removed by everyone in posession of the key but only the owner can attach it again.

To secure a ship from drifting or being dragged or pushed away it's important to moor it with a mooring anchor. A ship can be moored by the commander and any passenger but only the commander can raise the anchor.

On Freedom ships can not be lockpicked. Trying so will result in the message Stealing boats is punished with death penalty here. You decide not to.

Notes
*If you are building a ship larger than a small sailing boat inside a cart, it will become too heavy to drag. Make sure to move the cart next to water before it gets too heavy. See small cart to find out how much you can drag.
*The person to attach the last piece to an unfinished ship becomes the owner when it is finished.
*Currently there are no beneficial results from improving the quality of a ship.
*Ships with a quality of less than 10 cannot be commanded.
A dirty sack with four metal blades along its rim. A rope is attached to it. The idea is that you drag it along the bottom and gather mud.

The dredge's main ability is to dig from below water level. The maximum depth you can dredge may be determined by your digging skill. Dredge quality is also known to affect maximum depth. To dredge deeper than 7 dirts below water level, which is a shovel's limit, you need to be on a boat or ship. You cannot dredge at a depth greater than 180 dirt below sea level.

Creating
* The quality of the rope affects your success chance.
* The quality of the square piece of cloth affects the initial quality of the dredge.

Using
Dredging works similar to digging: Move on top of the corner you want to dig at, right-click the boat or ship you are on, and select Dredge. You do not have to right-click any tile in particular. The dredged material appears inside the dredge.

On bigger ships you may have to embark as passenger to get the option to dredge, because as the commander you might technically be too far way from the boat to use it. It is also a good idea to moor your ship or boat before dredging.

You can dredge all kinds of material, for instance clay. However, clay, peat and tar tiles will only lower if the corner you are digging at is close to some terraformable tile type. The material dug is generally determined by the tile you are closest to its northwest corner.

Notes
* A dredge can hold, for example, 2 piles of dirt or heaps of sand (40kg), or 36 clay (72kg), before it requires emptying.

A steel lump is the result from combining a 2:1 ratio of iron lump and a glowing hot piece of charcoal to harden the metal. That means for 0.50kg of charcoal you need about 1.00kg of iron lump.

As of this patch, steel items now take reduced damage on use. Recorded tests suggest 20-30% damage reduction. This forum thread outlines some player tests and the results so far.

As with other metals, using steel to create items means you need to use steel lumps to improve those items.

Notes
* The iron can be combined into one lump as only the amount required is used.
* Iron lumps of 1kg or more, but less than 2kg result in 0.8kg steel lumps while larger iron lumps will result in only 0.4kg steel lumps.
* The quality of the charcoal affects the success chance as well as the likelihood the lump will be high quality. It would be wise to not risk wasting high quality iron on poor charcoal unless you have a lot of it.
* The quality of the iron lump caps the quality of the steel lump.
* A failed attempt consumes the charcoal and transforms 0.4kg of iron into a new lump with 10% of the original QL.
* Only the charcoal needs to be glowing hot.

; "You find nothing interesting." : There is nothing to be botanized but you will find something foragable here.
Tips
* A grass tile can be botanized every 24 real hours. It is believed that the timer is triggered by an attempt, and not by an actual item being found. Therefore if nothing is found, try another tile instead of repeatedly trying the same one.
* Tiles that are not botanized for long periods of time (a week or longer) have a higher chance of giving something than tiles that are checked 24 to 36 hours apart.
* It also seems that there is a higher chance of getting something if the tile has flowers on it.
* Higher skill reduces the action timer.
* Tree tiles cannot be botanized on.
* It is possible to both forage and botanize on the same tile as these actions are on seperate timers.
Notes
* New players start out with a non-improvable medium wooden shield.
* If you fail creating the shield, the nails and the plank are damaged.
* Neither the QL of the nails nor the QL of the plank appears to affect chance of creation.
* The last plank added to the shield determines the wood type of the finished shield.
