*Examples of using combined ash bundles on a container full of water include: 6.4k ash and a cauldron for 64 kg lye, 1.2 kg ash and a bucket for 12 kg lye, o.2 kg ash and a jar for 2 kg lye.
*Failing to create lye uses 0.2 kg of water.

[[CDB|Main]] / '''{{PAGENAME}}'''

== Description ==
'''Decay''' is the [[wikipedia:erosion|erosion]] over time of [[item]]s and man-made structures, as well as player [[skill]]s. There are various ways to reduce decay.

== Item decay modifiers ==
* [[Deed]]s decrease decay on [[wall]]s of any kind by 10x, if the [[upkeep]] is higher than 7 [[day]]s.
* Deeds stop the decay on walls of any kind if the upkeep is higher than 30 days.
* [[Kingdom]]s reduce wall decay by 2x.
* Non-kingdom zones have no reduced decay.
* Houses reduce item decay by 2x? Possibly 3x?.
* [[Container]]s will reduce decay by 2x.
* Items made out of [[cedar]] wood decay slower.
* Raw materials ([[clay]], [[dirt]], [[log]]s, [[rock shards|rock]]s,[[meat]] etc) decay faster than finished materials ([[weapon]]s, [[tool]]s, etc.)
* There is a 2-day period of no decay after a wall is finished.
* Items do not decay in inventories or on merchants (note that using merchants to prevent decay may be considered an exploit on [[Server types#Epic servers|Epic]]), with the exception of food items.
* Houses that are abandoned get greatly increased decay. A house is considered abandoned when the writ owner does not log in to the same server for more than 1.5 months (real life). The decay rate for abandoned houses is currently unknown.
* For non-abandoned houses that are off deed the decay rate is (perish-ability/QL) total damage per decay tick.
* A [[Stone house|stone house]]s(walls/windows/doors) perish-ability is 3, making its average decay per tick (3/wall QL).
* A [[Wooden house|wooden house]]s(walls/windows/doors) perish-ability is 10, making its average decay per tick (10/wall QL).

==Myths==
* Containers made out of cedar do not reduce the decay of its contents any more than a non-cedar container would.
* Stacking a container inside another container does NOT improve the bonus
* Containers in the [[inventory]] do not modify the decay rate of their contents at all.
* [[Bless]] has no affect on decay. Its only use is to activate metal altars.

==Notes==
* An item in a container, in a house, in kingdom territory probably multiplies the bonus, but this needs verifying.
==About Babel==

Babel is a project to alphabetize Wurmpedia pages by their name. It is also called the "Alphabetical Index".

You can list a page in Babel by adding this wikicode to the page: <nowiki>[[Category:Babel/</nowiki>''LETTER/NUMBER''<nowiki>]]</nowiki>.

Please help to expand Babel so eventually we can list every single article located in the Wurmpedia mainspace.
If you're looking for information about '''Wurm Online''' itself, try the [[Main Page]] or [[complete DB]].
== Looking for something to do? ==

First of all, please make sure you've read the [[WurmPedia:Style|style guidelines]].

The list of things to be done is long. For instance, you can:

* Add a [[Special:Wantedpages|wanted page]].
* Edit the [[:Category:Stub|stubs]].
* Add links to a [[Special:Deadendpages|dead end page]].
* Categorise the [[Special:Uncategorizedpages|uncategorised pages]].

Or have a look at the projects below for more specific tasks. Feel free to suggest new projects at the [[Wurmpedia:Village square]].
==General guidelines==

These [[Style|guidelines]] are not meant to make WurmPedia a bureaucracy, but to make it easier for everyone (including you) to edit and discuss things. Remember you can help people get to know how to use a wiki, even if you're a beginner yourself.

* Keep pages short.
* Avoid use of HTML when wiki markup will do.
* Keep the content of the article focused.
* Be respectful of others.

===Discussion guidelines===

* Put discussion on the '''discussion''' tab (every page has one).
* Sign your name with four tildes <nowiki> ~~~~ </nowiki> at the '''end''' of your comment.
* Put your comment below all the rest under a given header.
* Do not interrupt other peoples comments.
* Put new topics under a new header at the '''bottom''' of a page.

===Editing etiquette===

* Avoid deleting other people's work.
* If you must delete and something you deleted reappears, '''do not''' delete it a second time. Use <s>strikethrough</s> and work it out with the other person using the '''discussion''' tab (every page has one) or the user's '''discussion''' tab (every user has one).

Refer to the help page on [http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing WikiMedia.org]<br>
Refer to [[Style]] for guidance on rules that help to maintain Wurmpedia's standards.<br><br>
There is a [http://wikipedia.mozdev.org/index.html Firefox Extension for editing the wiki], which is very useful.

Consider creating [[MetaWikiPedia:Template]] for text that is often used. Templates could be used to make menus, headers, and footers. The main WikiPedia use them a lot. For example: [[MetaWikiPedia:Template:H:f_Help|Help Footer]].

Some [[:Category:Template|common templates]] here are:
:*<span style="color: #000000;background:#E6FFE6;"><nowiki>{{stub}}</nowiki></span> which marks a page as being a stub and lists it in the [[:Category:Stub]] page.
:*<span style="color: #000000;background:#E6FFE6;"><nowiki>{{cleanup}}</nowiki></span> which marks a page´s layout as requiring attention.
:*<span style="color: #000000;background:#E6FFE6;"><nowiki>{{copyedit}}</nowiki></span> which marks a page´s spelling or grammar as needing improvement.
:*...and finally <span style="color: #000000;background:#E6FFE6;"><nowiki>{{smiley}}</nowiki></span> to use on Talk pages. Smile! {{smiley}}

You can use [http://jtidy.sourceforge.net/] to convert HTML snippets to Wiki syntax.

==Background==
Sadly enough, I am old enough to have played [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pong| Pong] on a brand-new [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atari_2600| Atari 2600] system, and yet I still play video games. I don't pretend to understand what continues to draw me back to these pixelated logic systems. I just know that I enjoy them (too much). Even though I spend most of my waking hours away from consoles and keyboards, curiosity lures me in - time and again.

I have enjoyed playing several varieties of MMOs over the years - everything from browser-based games to full game clients. After a while I tend to drift away. Nevertheless, I eventually continue my search for new games which will capture my interest for a bit longer.

I have participated in a number of wikis as well. A few were centered on game documentation. Others served wider communities. I hope my experiences on them will produce positive results in the ''Wurmpedia'' community.

==''Wurm Online'' experiences==
I had tried loading ''Wurm Online'' onto my laptop in 2010. I was only able to get it working well enough to experience several client crashes within the [[Golden Valley (server)|Golden Valley]] tutorial area. I decided it was unplayable on my hardware, and finally removed it from the hard drive.

In 2011 - as Windows XP continued to expose its true identity as bloatware - I decided to try the Lubuntu OS (a Ubuntu linux derivative) on my laptop. I found it was still a very capable machine. When I eventually ran across ''Wurm Online'' once again. I decided to give it a second try.

After a successful load, I started playing my [[Player:Thyrh|Thyrh]] character on February 24, 2012. As I continued to learn the game, I used the Wurmpedia wiki more and more. I began to find some areas needing updating, and other areas which had not been fully developed. I finally registered for a wiki user account on April 2.

My current character list includes:
*[[Player:Thyrh|Thyrh]] on Exodus
*[[Undefined player|RoaminPete]] on Exodus
*[[Undefined player|Havram]] on Deliverance

==''Wurmpedia'' experiences and goals==
I hope that my participation will improve wiki usability. As of June 2012, I have been able to assist in reducing the [[Special:SpecialPages|Special pages]] maintenance reports substantially by just "filling in the blanks" so to speak. I was able to dedicate a bit of time in clearing up the [[Special:WantedPages|Wanted pages]] listing by making prodigious use of the [[Undefined player]] and [[Undefined settlement]] pages which had been fortuitously written by [[User:Gaeron|Gaeron]]. I then began to settle a few of the missing image issues created on that page by template coding; the final solution became simply hard-coding each image name into the referring pages. This has been quite a task, but I began to notice some of these pages were already resolved. [[User:KaiH|KaiH]] had come to the rescue, and had been taking on the same task (Hooray!).

Now that the ''Special pages'' is beginning to draw to a close, I have been looking at what else I might contribute to the wiki. This has lead me to notice that our ''Community portal'' and ''Help'' areas would benefit from some updating and modifications. My goal here would be to improve usability by all ''Wurmpedia'' users. As we improve the ''Wurmpedia'' experience for readers and editors, I expect our admins might find their task loads should be lessened. A better educated wiki community should be easier to administrate than a mob of unguided keypunchers (I hope).

==Comments are welcome==
In the spirit of open communication which our wiki should foster, I invite those who have comments (or reservations) about any of my efforts here to post their comments on my talk page.

All constructive comments are most welcome. I'll just have to deal with the rest as I see fit...lol.

== Namespaces for Settlements ==
There are a lot of settlements listed on the Wiki and I suggest that they get their own namespace, regardless of their server or whether or not they longer exist. This would tidy them up into one area and also mean if anyone happens to create, or have already created, a settlement with the same name as a current page there would be little confusion. I know we already have categories for the settlements, but I believe they deserve their own namespace... even more so than wounds (which DO have their own). Thoughts? --[[User:Marni|purp]] 10:04, 21 May 2009 (CDT)
:Seems reasonable to me, however what about the situation of two villages having the same names on different servers, how would that work? [[User:Robert|Robert]] 11:47, 21 May 2009 (CDT)

:: I like this too. rolf could make it so when u right click on the token and select "what's this?" u will see village's wiki page. something similar to "Player:" pages. [[Player:Norill|Norill]]

:Hm I don't know if creating a namespace like "Settlement:" or so would be the best solution, is there a function/way to "join" multiple categories on one page? Effectively there will be abandoned settlements, freedom settlements, wild jk/mr/hots settlements and epic jk/mr/hots settlements (8 categories total), the home settlements will either go to abandoned or to one of the other servers.
:Settlements with identical names on different or same server (if possible) have to be linked on a disambiguation page either way (e.g. Existing Village (Freedom) and Existing Village (Wild)), regardless of having a namespace or not. Or we could just create a new Category, additionally to server-specific categories and just name it Settlements.
:Either way, it would be a hell of a lot of editing. --[[User:Ulviirala|Ulviirala]] 13:47, 21 May 2009 (CDT)
:I'd be willing to do work on it.... if not all of it. We could always test on a few settlements which already exist... and we don't have to limit it to deeded settlements. If you search for Bees for example, it brings up an old settlement. If wurm ever introduced bees into the game (for honey say..) then this is going to cause a conflict. Just an idea, nice to see a few people discussing though. Any further ideas anyone? --[[User:Marni|Marni]] 14:20, 21 May 2009 (CDT)
::Hm I just saw that the [[:Category:Settlements]] sums all categories up pretty much, so I think they will be fine without a namespace imho. --[[User:Ulviirala|Ulviirala]] 08:17, 22 May 2009 (CDT)
:I'd love to be able to filter out all the village updates from 'Recent changes'. That would be quite simple if we put villages in their own namespace. Shouldn't be too hard to simply move them all there and I'm be willing to do it. --[[User:Arvid|Arvid]] 12:56, 28 December 2010 (UTC)

== Volume and Capacity ==

I would like to propose adding Volume and Capacity to the item template. Capacity would apply only to containers (removed from other items) and would be the capacity of the container in liters. Volume would be the volume of the item, also in liters.

For binnable items, the volume is easy to figure out, as that is what the weight column represents in the BSB. For other items, this number can be obtained experimentally by seeing how many fit into certain containers. --[[User:Telarin|Telarin]] 20:37, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

== Languages ==
I suggest we scrap the non-English languages section of the wiki, there are too few contributors to keep those up to date. We're having enough trouble with keeping the English version up to date --[[User:Manny|Manny]] 08:21, 5 May 2010 (UTC)

==RE: ''Player:'' Redirects And Babel Information==
Okay, we need a collaborative effort in making all of these happen. As you should know, a Wiki redirect is as follows: ''<nowiki>#Redirect [[Pagename]]</nowiki>''. So when you come across a link to a User:USERNAME page please take the time to copy all the information on that page then make a redirect to Player:PLAYERNAME(for this purpose we will assume every wurmpedia account has a corresponding Wurm Online player account, if not please redirect that user page to the matching in-game name). Now go to the page you just redirected to and paste the information in, additionally you will need to add to the bottom of the page ''<nowiki>[[Category:Ingame Help]][[Category:Players]][[Category:Babel/INSERTFIRSTLETTEROFPLAYER'SNAMEHERE]]</nowiki>''.
::'''AHAH!''' I was talking on the MW irc and they told me of a simple solution. :) We get Egal to rename the User: namespace to Player: they also said for us to get Egal to upgrade ;) not sure if it's required to change namespaces(why would it be, seems like a simple database thing) ~ [[User:Tigiot|Tigiot]] 13:58, 7 February 2007 (CST)
== French branch ==

I was wondering if a translation effort would be welcomed. Is it?

Huh? There are not that much French people playing wurm :p I would be useless

And how could we translate the 1000+ article? It's a lot of work, and I don't think that there are a lot of people who can speak french who want to translate the whole wiki :O

Up to now, me and Kiri are on it. We tried it on the '''Main page'''. --[[User:Kanif|Kanif]] 14:03, 14 June 2006 (CDT)

I asked [[User:Egal|Egal]] and she said that the french pages should be prefixed with either "Francais:" or "Fr:". I think "Fr:" would be just fine. Onward, "Es:", "Ru:", might become interesting. --[[User:Kanif|Kanif]] 02:05, 16 June 2006 (CDT)

Would it be possible for Wurmpedia to detect the language preference of the visitor's browser and redirect those who chose fr, fr-CA, fr-FR, fr-BE, fr-CH and on to <nowiki>[[Fr:Page principale]]</nowiki>? --[[User:Kanif|Kanif]] 22:10, 16 June 2006 (CDT)

That would be possible if we asked Egal to make a script that does it. For example there is a wiki.php script which is executed when the user clicks "Wiki" in the menu, instead of going straight to the wiki, then the wiki.php script finds the language and redirects the user onwards to the real wiki.

--[[User:Ancient|Ancient]] 05:32, 17 June 2006 (CDT)

My proposed code is below:

<?php
// Language Redirect Script by Graham Edgecombe aka Ancient
//
// Find the user's language
$language = $_SERVER['HTTP_ACCEPT_LANGUAGE'];
// Default it to English if it is not set by the browser
if(!isset($language))
{
$language = "en";
}
// A list of all the languages supported and their "Main Page" names is defined here
$languages_supported = array
(
"en"    =>    "Main Page"
"fr"    =>    "Page principale"
"de"    =>    "Hauptseite"
);
// Checks to see if the users language is supported
if(isset($languages_supported[$language]))
{
// If so redirect them to their language's home page which is "language code":"Main Page in that language" - of course this means English goes to "En:Main Page" so we will have to make a redirect in the wiki to go back to "Main Page"
header("Location: http://www.wurmonline.com/wiki/" . $language . ":" . $languages_supported[$language]);
}
else
{
// Otherwise redirect them to the Main Page, this could also be another page saying that the language is not supported
header("Location: http://www.wurmonline.com/wiki/Main Page");
}
?>

--[[User:Ancient|Ancient]] 05:28, 17 June 2006 (CDT)

The web server has a function that, when there is a page that has multiple copy but all ending with a language code (ex.: index.html.en, index.html.fr, index.html.fr-CH, index.html.es) then it returns the file that match the language of the browser. It isn't turned on by default.

I don't think that would work with the wiki - it would do a different index.php file for each language, what we want is a different page in the wiki database, and that has to be done by passing a different parameter to the script, not by finding a different index.php file. --[[User:Ancient|Ancient]] 01:55, 18 June 2006 (CDT)
== Signature generator ==

You can access it [http://www.grahamedgecombe.com/wurm/index.php?c=signature.php here].

You can choose a background image, add some text and put some dynamic text in. At the moment you have three choices for dynamic text: number of players on home server, number of players on wild server or number of players on all the servers.

It might be slightly off to what you see on [http://www.wurmonline.com www.wurmonline.com] because it only updates every 5 minutes.

Here's a sample signature:
== Namespaces for Settlements ==

== Volume and Capacity ==

I feel we need to discuss on how to do the talk pages for users, should we redirect the User talk:USERNAME to Talk:Player:USERNAME or vice versa? ~ [[User:Tigiot|Tigiot]] 01:18, 4 February 2007 (CST)

: Keep the user talk page. The wiki emails me when my user talk page is changed, it does not when my player talk page is changed :) [[User:Manny|Manny]] 02:30, 4 February 2007 (CST)

It would be so much easier if Notch just changed the client to access User: pages instead of Player: pages. --[[User:Ancient|Ancient/Graham Edgecombe]] 06:26, 16 February 2007 (CST)

I've changed my opinion on this, I think User: and Player: should be kept separate, some users might want different info to display on each. --[[User:Ancient|Ancient/Graham Edgecombe]] 02:09, 31 August 2007 (CDT)

===Babel===
On another note, for uniformities sake can we all make it so that when we are adding categories that we '''always''' make <nowiki>[[Category:Babel/LETTER]]</nowiki> the last category in the article? ~ [[User:Tigiot|Tigiot]] 01:21, 4 February 2007 (CST)
::Update: There is a slight problem, easily fixed though. Close Firefox. First download this file into some folder on your computer: http://downloads.mozdev.org/wikipedia/wikipedia_0.8.0.2.xpi. Next extract the wikipedia_0.8.0.2.xpi file into C:\Documents and Settings\[USER]\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\[PROFILE THINGY]\extensions\wikitoolbar. Now go back to the profile directory and edit the file in there called extensions.ini by adding an extra extension variable in continuity with the value of the wikitoolbar folder. Restart Firefox, now it won't be on the add-ons list but it will appear. This took me about 2 minutes to figure out. ~ [[User:Tigiot|Tigiot]] 21:06, 2 February 2007 (CST)
Huh? There are not that much French people playing wurm :p I would be useless

And how could we translate the 1000+ article? It's a lot of work, and I don't think that there are a lot of people who can speak french who want to translate the whole wiki :O

<?php
// Language Redirect Script by Graham Edgecombe aka Ancient
//
);
// Checks to see if the users language is supported
if(isset($languages_supported[$language]))
{
// If so redirect them to their language's home page which is "language code":"Main Page in that language" - of course this means English goes to "En:Main Page" so we will have to make a redirect in the wiki to go back to "Main Page"
header("Location: http://www.wurmonline.com/wiki/" . $language . ":" . $languages_supported[$language]);
}
else
{
// Otherwise redirect them to the Main Page, this could also be another page saying that the language is not supported
header("Location: http://www.wurmonline.com/wiki/Main Page");
}

== Signature generator ==

Since the client has supported redirects for a while now, how about a bit of a reorganization spree involving deleting all the Item: Creature: Skill: (and so on) pages and redirecting them to their equivalent main namespace articles. Previous discussions non-relevant to the '''Main Page''' have been moved to the new [[Wurmpedia:Village square]] page where they will also be properly archived.
The front page isn't very dynamic, so I was thinking that adding a featured page system would be an excellent way to make it seem more interesting and attractive. == Reorganization of Talk Page ==

General WurmPedia topics can now be discussed on a separate WurmPedia project page entitled [[Wurmpedia:Village square]] (The title corresponds with the similarly named discussion thread on the Wurm forums). This will allow our wiki community to dedicate this present talk page to the continued improvement of the [[Main Page]].

An informational notice has been added to the top of this page to support this change of practice. An infobox has also been added to the bottom of the page to allow continued access to previous discussions without crowding-out active discussions.

Previous discussions non-relevant to the '''Main Page''' have been moved to the new [[Wurmpedia:Village square]] page where they will also be properly archived.

This new arrangement follows the general practice of other wikis. Hopefully, this will encourage more participation by seasoned wikipedians in the Wurm Online community. --[[User:Thyrh|Thyrh]] ([[User talk:Thyrh|talk]]) 11:36, 4 June 2012 (CDT)
I think what it's suggesting is that you copy and paste the main page into the translation field, but I don't see why people who commonly frequent English-language websites but speak it poorly would not do this already.

For example there is a wiki.php script which is executed when the user clicks "Wiki" in the menu, instead of going straight to the wiki, then the wiki.php script finds the language and redirects the user onwards to the real wiki.
if(isset($languages_supported[$language]))
{
// If so redirect them to their language's home page which is "language code":"Main Page in that language" - of course this means English goes to "En:Main Page" so we will have to make a redirect in the wiki to go back to "Main Page"
{
// Otherwise redirect them to the Main Page, this could also be another page saying that the language is not supported
header("Location: http://www.wurmonline.com/wiki/Main Page");
}

It might be slightly off to what you see on [http://www.wurmonline.com www.wurmonline.com] because it only updates every 5 minutes.
Should we add a new category to mainpage wich is about players with the highest skills and best achivements in villages and homesteads? --[[Player:ChJees|ChJees]] 07:58, 26 October 2007 (CDT)

: I'm not convinced that's a good idea. There's already a skill compare site, and villages can boast their accomplishments on the village pages. The wiki should be as objective as possible, getting involved in matters as subjective as which achievements are best is not attractive to me. - [[User:Dashiva|Dashiva]] 13:02, 26 October 2007 (CDT)

== Japanese wiki ==

I'm a bit hesitant to mess with the main page, but the japanese community have been working on their own wiki & I thought it might be a good idea to link to it. It's here:
http://wurm.mmorpgplayer.com/ --[[User:Uzetaab|Uzetaab]] 03:16, 2 January 2008 (CST)

: I added the link to the language bar. - [[User:Dashiva|Dashiva]] 17:04, 2 January 2008 (CST)

== Duplication of effort and redirects, a suggestion ==

Since the client has supported redirects for a while now, how about a bit of a reorganization spree involving deleting all the Item: Creature: Skill: (and so on) pages and redirecting them to their equivalent main namespace articles. I'm sure I can't be the only one who thinks having to maintain two copies of most pages is a big unnecessary pain.
[[User:Robert|Robert]] 04:48, 27 February 2009 (CST)

: Redirects were never the issue to begin with. The reason we have ingame help pages is because the client doesn't support markup. - [[User:Dashiva|Dashiva]] 10:51, 27 February 2009 (CST)

== Namespaces for Settlements ==

== Featured Pages ==

The front page isn't very dynamic, so I was thinking that adding a featured page system would be an excellent way to make it seem more interesting and attractive. We could probably shift it once a week or so, and draw attention to lesser known concepts that the Community would benefit from, as well as new players. The main page would be better with an overhaul, and with sections made neater and better updated. Perhaps the translations would be better put in a sidebar for example, or a literal translation de-emphasised in favour of a general overview of the game in various world languages. [[User:Ols|Ols]] 12:10, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

I've had no response in nearly a month, so I'm going ahead with it. Please contact me if you have a problem with changes. [[User:Ols|Ols]] 20:45, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

I would keep the page translations considering we have a wide assortment of players who do not speak English but still play wurm. --[[User:Doughboy|Doughboy]] 01:08, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

Indeed. Some translations are there, but others are simply links to Google translate, and do not provide much help to the players. I think what it's suggesting is that you copy and paste the main page into the translation field, but I don't see why people who commonly frequent English-language websites but speak it poorly would not do this already. [[User:Ols|Ols]] 11:04, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

We can't insinuate that they do though and you can't be 100% sure either way.--[[User:Doughboy|Doughboy]] 19:28, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

== Volume and Capacity ==

== Description ==
A small stone wall. Better for defensive purposes than the [[wooden fence]], yet still weaker than [[tall stone wall]]. Small stone walls are a good way to get your [[masonry]] skill up, and are relatively easy for even a new player to build, requiring no iron or other resources to create.

An unfinished wall will start at 1QL. Each rock shards adds up to 10% of its quality value to the wall. The actual amount is random but with higher skill you'll get the maximum per shards more often. The masonry skill also limits the effective shard QL.

Stone walls can be improved or repaired with [[rock shards]]. A 20kg rock shards will fix the walls [[damage]] by 10.
* Damage is not visually apparent on stone walls like it is with wooden fences - use 'Examine' to determine the state of stone walls.

=== Skill required ===
To calculate the [[maximum slope]] you can build on, based on your [[masonry]] skill, use the following formula (submitted by ketza):

''Max slope = (3 *'' √''skill) + 10''

'''Note:''' The solution is rounded ''down''.
}}

A '''steel lump''' is the result from combining a 2:1 ratio of [[iron lump]] and a [[temperature|glowing hot]] piece of [[charcoal]] to harden the metal. That means for 0.50kg of charcoal you need about 1.00kg of iron lump.

As of [http://www.wurmonline.com/wiki/index.php?title=Wurm_Server_Release_History#111110_Successful_Epic_debugging this patch], steel items now take reduced damage on use. Recorded tests suggest 20-30% damage reduction. [http://wurmonline.com/forum/index.php?topic=66260.0 This forum thread] outlines some player tests and the results so far.

As with other metals, using steel to create items means you need to use steel lumps to improve those items.

== Notes ==
* A success will result in 0.4kg of steel per 1.0kg of iron and 0.5kg of coal.
* Using larger pieces of iron and coal will result in larger pieces of steel. It will use as much material as possible in the 1.0kg iron to 0.5kg coal ratio. You may get less high QL pieces but the average QL will be similar to creating small steel pieces.
* A failed attempt decreases both the charcoal and the iron lumps weight by .04kg.
* The [[quality]] of the charcoal affects the success chance as well as the likelihood the lump will be high quality. It would be wise to not risk wasting high quality iron on poor charcoal unless you have a lot of it.
* The quality of the iron lump caps the quality of the steel lump.
* Only the charcoal needs to be glowing hot.
