Food storage bins average the quality of the items added, for example grain, cooked meat and herbs. Decay of the stored items is virtually stopped. They decay like normal wood items such as chests. Once they are destroyed the items inside are gone. There is a small loss in average quality level of items inserted. 5% of the stored goods are lost per month.
