Introduction

I've read many wurmians use a 3D modeling tool to plan their projects, Because of that i've decided to make a Guide for one of these software, Google Sketchup. It's not very hard to understand Sketchup; you'll soon find out you're able to plan a wurm project with it. If you need any help send me a pm ingame or on the forums (name: Beast)

The Basics

Sketchup isn't very hard. You can learn the basics in a couple of minutes using official tutorials and videos. The only thing I can say is try to make some simple things like blocks first. When you think you're ready for the Wurm mapping, read on.

Wurm Mapping

Before you make something in Sketchup i suggest you use a 2d mapping tool like this one first

  • Make sure the the measures in the lower right box are in meters, if not go to preferences and set it to metric meters 3D in template tab.
  • Now make a square of 4x4 meters. Just start drawing a square and type 4,4 then hit enter.
  • Copy the squares to make a grid
  • Download the needed models from Wurm on the Sketchup Warehouse.
  • Click on the paint bucket and sample the paint from the needed tile type.
  • Paint the tiles in grid.

Slopes

  • Use the move tool to raise land, click on the corner you want to raise, press up key and raise the corner 0,1 meter per dirt high.

Houses and fences

  • Download the needed house, fence and gate models.
    • If you need a pallisade, Draw a some circles next to each other and pull them to around 5 metres high. You can make cones on them as well if you like
    • If you need a Tall stone wall, Take the low stone model and pull it to 5 Meters high
  • Start placing the models in the correct place, always make sure the outside of a house wall lines up with the tile border.

Roofs

  • Place roofs above the houses using the roof models tich made.
  • If you want to combine the 1/4th parts with the 1x1 parts, place them next to each other and fix them.

Cleaning the map up

  • Delete all guides and other unneeded lines
  • Take a look at the landscape components in windows -> components.
  • Add some trees if you wish, but keep in mind they strongly increase your file size

Hints and tips

  • Download all wurm models and save them in one file, this can speed up your mapping.
  • The best way to improve in Wurm mapping is by doing it often.
  • Try making some non-wurm models as well, by doing so you'll understand more complex structures and you'll be able to make more complicated maps.
  • If you have trouble raising the land exactly, you can make a vertical liner for it.
