When a beacon appears you may walk through it for the Rift Investigator achievement and when the rift is closed you will get the ''Rift Defender'' and ''Rifter'' [[titles]].
The rifts work off of a points system. Depending on the amount of kills the player participated in they can get a higher participation ranking. The rankings are from minimal to phenomenal. Before the rift is closed you may type /rift to get the participation ranking list; however, you have to be standing inside the rift area. After the rift is closed the command can be issued anywhere to view the ranking list.
