Rare floats will take less damage.
Floats should be chosen wisely for each fishing situation, as they will affect the outcomes and difficulty of catching a fish (i.e. missing or jumping the hook, etc). Each fish has a feeding height of "top", "bottom" or "any" depth, and there is a corresponding float choice that offers the best chance to hook each fish.
