Bartenders are NPC's that live in Inns and are found in the starting towns if you right click one, and have not played for more then 24 hours, they will give free food and drink. You don't actually don't get any items, but your thirst and food bars are filled as well as your nutrition. If you don't know how long you have been playing say in chat /time and in your event window you can see how long you have been playing.
