You must have Premium time to be a priest. It is by far the best option to start your priest as a premium character from the outset, the reason being that all your characteristics will then be rising the whole time you are raising your Faith.
You will return to being a follower when you lose premium but getting it again will re-priest you as long as you don't do anything that will change your faith points.
