Quality is one of the most important statistics in in Wurm. It is measured in QL, Quality Level, in the inventory and in containers.
+
#redirectquality level
It decides how good something is and how well it works. Higher QL is better quality.
Quality in general
Higher quality decreases:

* the rate at which items are damaged by use, attack and decay

and increases:

* the general performance of the item

* the quality of the items they produce.

Quality in tools
Higher quality decreases:

* the time it takes to perform actions with the tool

and increases:

* the chance of success when creating items

* the quality level you can improve items to using the tool, where the highest ql is a combination of tool ql and your skill.

*the chance of success when continuing to build.

Quality in foods
Foods are everything from herbs and fruits to casseroles and steaks.
Higher quality decreases:

* the rate of decay (makes the food last longer in storage)

and increases:

* the amount the food will fill you if you eat it

* the final quality of the dish you are cooking, though it is capped at you cooking skill.

Quality in fires
(campfires, forges, ovens)
Higher quality decreases:

* the time it takes to heat items up.

Quality in containers
(barrels, chests, fountains)
Higher quality decreases:

* decay rate of items stored.

Quality in buildings and walls
(houses, walls, fences, gates)
Higher quality decreases:

* damage taken from decay as well as from attacks; a Ql 40 wall will take a greater punishment than a QL 10 before breaking.

Quality in specific
(unique cases)
Higher quality increases:

* the number of guards in a Guard Tower, there is one every 10 ql. A 24ql tower has 2 guards while a QL 41 tower has 4 guards. A tower will always have 1 guard, but it will not get a second until it passes 20 QL.

* the range of a god's presence around an altar.

Quality on products
When refining raw materials, the products will in many cases mimic the QL of the raw material used, however, if the raw material has taken damage, the QL of the products will be lower. It follows this formula:

QL on products = ((100 - DMG on raw material) * QL on raw material) / 100

So a QL 40 log with 50 damage will produce QL 20 planks at best.
