• The slope you are building on has to be 10 or less, otherwise you get this message: [...] The slope must be 10 or less.
• It's possible to lock a Portcullis with a Gate lock. Intelligent creatures and players can open unlocked gates.
• Also see Stone portcullis and Plain stone portcullis, both of which are building entryways, and as such, need door locks.
