The only place to safely store items is a Settlement token bank. A settlement token bank account only stores 5 items and any amount of coins. If item is a container like a backpack it has to be empty to be placed in your Settlement token bank account.
You can also store some small items in a Bag of Keeping, you will keep these items when you die. However Bag of Keepings are hard to get hold of.
