A dredge is used to dig dirt from under the water level. Maximum depth is determined by your digging skill. You need a boat to dredge. When not in a boat you can only dredge to the same depth as you could dig with a shovel (2 dirt deep).

To use a dredge, while in a boat such as a Small Rowing boat, you simply float on top of the tile you want to dredge, and right click the tiles below and select "Dredge". Dredging will also make the tile you dredged steeper, just like normal digging. There is no specific boat to dredge from. There is no such boat as a "Dredger".

Dredging is for most purposes identical to digging on land. Thus dredging on dirt or sand lowers the terrain, while dredging on clay does not. The dredged items appear inside the dredge. The dredge can only hold two dirt or sand, so make sure you have access to the ship hold. Tar, peat and clay take less space, and the dredge does not need to be emptied as often.

Description

A dirty sack with four metal blades along its rim. A rope is attached to it. The idea is that you drag it along the bottom and gather material from the ground.

The dredge's main ability is to dig from below water level. The maximum depth you can dredge is determined by your digging skill. Also, to dredge deeper than 2 dirts below water level, like with a shovel, you need to be on a boat or ship.

Dredging works similar to digging. Move ontop of the corner you want to dig at, thus lowering it, right-click the boat or ship you're on, and select Dredge. You don't have to right-click a tile in particular. Peat, clay, and tar tiles will only lower if the corner you're digging at is close to a tiletype that is terraformable.

On bigger ships you may have to embark as passenger to get the option to dredge, because as the commander you might technically be too far way from the boat to use it. It's also a good idea to moor your ship or boat before dredging.

Notes

  • When creating, the quality of the rope affects your success chance.
  • When creating, the quality of the square piece of cloth affects the initial quality of the dredge.
  • You can dig all kinds of material, perfect for dredging clay. The material dug is generally determined by the tile you're closest to its northwest corner.
  • The dredged material appears inside the dredge.
  • A dredge can hold 2 dirts or heaps of sand (40kg), or 36 clay (72kg), for example.
