Description

A large cart is a mobile container used to transport cargo or people dragged by someone or led by up to 2 animals. A large cart needs to be at least 10 QL for the owner to be able to use it as "commander".

Subcomponents

Total Materials

Note: At very low fine carpentry skills, it is a good idea to make a couple of extra shafts and planks.

Hitching

To hitch an animal to your cart, lead it with rope, right-click the cart, and select Hitch. Up to two animals can be bitched but some animals may be too weak to drag a cart, possibly because the animal is generally too small and/or too weak, too young, or too old.

Unhitching

To unhitch an animal from your cart, embark the cart, right-click the animal, and select Unhitch.

Hitching notes

  • For convenient speed, it is recommended to hitch two animals; age does not affect speed.
  • Brown bears are the fastest draggers so far (discuss speeds on the talk page).
  • The cart doesn't move faster when going downhill, but it will slow down a little when going uphill, just as if riding an animal.
  • Terrain type does not affect speed.
  • Animals cannot drag a cart over tiles that have a slope of 30 or higher at any edge; move back a little and go around it.
  • Your stamina is drained while driving the cart but it has no effect on the speed if you run out of stamina. However, you might be in sudden trouble when being chased by an aggressive creature.
  • Maximum weight animals can drag is currently unlimited.
  • With a young bear and a young bull a speed of 12.96km is on a large cart over level cobblestone is achieved.
  • Be wary if your animals pulling the large cart are wounded your speed will be affected negatively until the animals recover.

Notes

  • The first plank is lost if you fail the initial attachment.
  • The quality of the cart affects its decay rate.
  • The volume of items will affect how many can fit into a cart. (See next section.)
  • Although carts cannot be dragged in water tiles, they can be pushed.
  • 47.23 kg of dye is needed to paint a large cart.
  • The maximum weight you can drag in a large cart is determined by the formula: (Body Strength * 7 - Amount of weight you're carrying) * 10 - 240.
  • Large carts have a "manage vehicle" option to set who (friends, village, or everyone) can drive (embark as "commander"), mount (embark/ride as passenger), access inventory hold, manage the settings, and transfer ownership. However, when opened, that name can't be changed, unfortunately.
  • Keel section can not fit in large carts.
  • Can not be locked anymore.

Useful capacity quantities

Can be adjusted by stacking other containers, such as rafts, inside.

Building items inside carts

This is a precarious thing to do as sometimes an item must be on the ground in order to be continued or finished. Other times, the item may be too heavy to remove from the cart once finished or too heavy to remove to add the last piece, leaving you with a 99% complete item that can never be used. A patch was applied in October, 2008 making it impossible to finish most items inside carts, including, but not restricted to, fountains.

A few amusing things that used to be able to be finished inside carts: shrines, fountains, guard towers, forges (could not light), and mailboxes.
